By Bryan Burbank

Drinking wine is becoming a rapidly growing past time for many Americans. For many years consuming wine was considered an expensive hobby. But fortunately all that has changed today with the growth in imports, the popularity of boxed wines, the many discount chains, the bumper crop of grapes and the poor economy have made drinking wine a cheap hobby. In this article I will give you some tips for finding good spirits at a cheap price.

First, you will want to do some research, read a magazine like Wine Spectator that has monthly articles on wines under $20.00, also many of the food magazines do articles on reasonable priced wines. Food and Wine Magazine does excellent articles featuring specific varieties of cheap wines. The internet is another excellent resource for information on inexpensive wines. Two of the best sites are 10dollarwine and slashfood.

Secondly familiarize yourself with many of the boxed wines. The advantage to the boxed wines is that you can purchase a box for somewhere between $14 and $18, wand they hold 3 liters of liquid approximately four bottles that would cost you around $4 each. Also a box is easy to store and serve. There are many good varieties available in boxes today.

Third, you may want to try some of the inexpensive imports now available. Australia and Chile have become very large players in the import market today and their wines are much better than American and French wine at comparable prices.

Fourth, good ones no longer need be purchased at fine spirit stores. Many large box and discount stores now carry great wines at cheap prices. Some of the best places to buy inexpensive ones is at Trader Joe’s, Costo, and Bev Mo. You should follow their ads for good deals and try some of the varieties.

Lastly, when out shopping look for new brands and labels that appeal to you. If you are purchasing them for under $10 you really don’t have much to loose and may be very surprised with what you find. The secret to finding great cheap wines is to experiment. Many times the wines you will find at a great price may be a small issue but enjoy it for as long as you can. Not being a wine snob can lead to many hours of enjoying great bottle at a cheap price.
